Short Stories

Hi guys, I wrote this for my Eisteddfod writing piece at school. The prompt was escape to the countryside.
I chose it because my teacher said that the title was boring, so I tried to make it as interesting as I could 🙂

Escape to the countryside

Dark clouds had started tracing their way across the star-strewn sky when they caught up to me.

I was walking across the countryside, and towards the Dark Woods. Or at least, thats what I called them. There wasn’t anyone to hear me anyways. Not anymore. Not since the Plague. My mind drifted to how it had all begun.

The  Plague had taken over suddenly and without warning. I’d simply woken up one morning to my mother, dead in her bed, blood in her mouth. To a 13 year old kid, it’s horrible. To survive being hunted, it’s traumatic. Fighting for food, for water, for a place to sleep, all without getting caught. And doing it alone.   Nobody had survived. Except me. And them. I was Human. They were… something else. Vampires. Werewolves. Sirens. It had been years of surviving in the city before I decided to escape to the countryside. And now, at age 16, I was strong enough to risk it.

A knife whistled past me, burying itself in the tree next to me. I turned slowly, gripping my own knife, currently strapped to my side with a leather harness. A crow cawed overhead. I shivered.

“Hello again, little mouse.” Said a silky smooth voice behind me. Directly behind me. It was him. One of them. One of the vampires after my blood. His companion would not be far behind. I bit back a curse as I saw a flash of ruby red eyes to my left. She’s already here. I thought, drawing my knife.

“And goodbye” I responded. Maybe they were in a merciful mood. Maybe they’d let me go simply because they wanted to chase me again.

But cold steel pressing into my abdomen silenced the thought.

Knife. Knife. Knife. Knife. My mind was screaming.

I took a deep breath, before grabbing the man’s arm, currently pressing a knife into my stomach, and twisting his wrist at an angle. He growled, releasing the knife. I shoved him out the way and ran, but I had not gotten far before I felt a sharp pain exploding in my skull. No. No. No. There’s more. There’s more. I fell to the floor, the world blurry. Blurry. Blurry. Another sharp pain in my temple. Then black. They had me now.
