Mother Tongue

I don’t understand you, though you speak my mother tongue.

You hear what I hear, know what I know.

Your words are foreign, though their meanings are familiar.

For your words have two meanings.

You say “it’s ok” but you mean “ I will remember”

You say “ I forgive you” but you mean “Do it again, I dare you,”

Your words have two meanings and I don’t understand, though you speak my mother tongue.

When you told me “ I’m done,” you meant “ you aren’t worth it”

and then did I realise, that perhaps you never really did speak my mother tongue.
