A small, orange pack is thrust into my arms and the door is shut before I get to see who was out there. I exhale. Lock the door, and open the pack. The sweet smell of chocolate hits my nose. I sigh happily, unwrapping a small one. The surprise of chocolate was a welcome one. I begin to examine the rest of the pack. A loaf of bread, an apple, a few more chocolates, some sort of biltong, and… a mask. A gas mask. Pinned to it is a note that says; The air outside has become toxic. When in the tunnels, please wear these for your safety.
I strap the mask to my face, just to get the feel of it. After adjusting the straps, I transfer the supplies from the small bag, to my larger one. I took out my phone, printed the picture of the map, and packed a first aid kit, and some toiletries. I check the map. The tunnels start… In my basement. I’m not entirely sure how that came to happen, how they managed to connect all the tunnels like that, and I’m not sure I want to find out. I make my way down to the basement, and switch on the flashlight. There is a door set into the far wall of the bare room. I shiver. I make my way to the door, strapping my mask to my face. I grip the iron handle, hesitating. What if the creatures were down there? What if the mask didn’t protect me? What if… I shoved away the thoughts. I had to get to the safe house. Had to. They probably had more people there, food, water, essentials. And I needed that desperately. I had no choice. I opened the door, and stepped through the doorway, shutting it behind me. I inspected my surroundings, rough stone walls, no light other than my torch. Nothing else there. I followed the map for the next day, turning, twisting, going up and down stairs, until I came upon a small circular room. It was bare, but seemed like a good place to sleep for the night. I unrolled my blanket and lie down, trying to sleep. Unsurprisingly, sleep does not come for a very, very long time.
But as I am about to drift off to dream and relive the last few minutes of Maddy’s life in my head, yet again,I hear something rustle in the dark. Something coming closer…And closer… And closer…
